Toronto Virtual Birthday Card

Last month, Toronto celebrated its 189th birthday and what better way to honour this special occasion than to reminisce down memory lane! From a scandalous mayor to a stylish monkey roaming outside an Ikea, here are four of the city’s most noteworthy moments you may have forgotten over the last decade, Kiarra Swaby reports.

1. North East blackout (2003)

On August 14th, 2003 a widespread power outage swept across the Northeastern and Midwestern United States, along with most parts of Ontario, Canada. Despite this taking place almost 20 years ago, one resident recalls the exact day what is now been named the Northeast Blackout of 2003.

2. Ikea Monkey (2012)

Shoppers at an Ikea location in North York where in for quite the surprise on December 9th, 2012, when a stylish monkey was seen roaming outside the store. A Co-Worker shares the unusual experience as if it happened yesterday.

3. Rob Ford Crack Scandal (2013)

Rob Ford was elected Toronto’s 64th mayor back on October 25th, 2010, but little did anyone know what was to come in the next four years.

4. Toronto Raptors Championship (2019)

The Raptors joined the list of Toronto’s top sports moments in 2019 after winning their first NBA Championship. The win sent the city into a frenzy full of night long celebrations and one of the biggest parades Toronto has ever seen.
